I still have somewhere one of the first AE Meyer books. Before of that, the ace in the sleeve was the good data exchange with AE and the easiness of the interface.

Now, if a big company takes an idea from a guy who’s trying to sell what his developing, and turns this idea into something bigger, I guess no one would bet the original plugin will survive.īy the way, that marketing move turned to be the winning card for Maxon as C4D has become the motion graphics industry standard tool. But I never read anything from Maxon saying at least thank you to those devs for that original idea. Yes, they expanded that original idea into something more robust or designer oriented. They took an idea, actually two similar ideas: DiTools from Remotion, and Jenna by Darf. What I really didn’t like is what they did with MoGraph. No one here is saying anything bad about the team.īut let me spend two words on the strategy this company dropped on the table. I think you’re confusing Maxon marketing guys with Maxon dev. They are a good team and I wish them well. I could repeat a lot of the criticism others have made of C4D, but I still have a soft spot for Maxon. If I had $4K to spend and I were trying to learn a package to get a job in the marketplace, I’d probably take Maya…īut I think C4D is better than you give it credit… Or if I had to build a pipeline with multiple packages, Softimage is pretty good. If I had to manipulate gobs of polys, Softimage is really great. your investment in Maya is just beginning at $3495.Īs for your saying it c4D isn’t even in the top three… I think it depends… I’d take c4D over lightwave in a heartbeat… and to be honest, I would take it over Softimage, too (probably) – it sort of depends on what I was trying to do. And there are other plugins you’ll probably need, too… And, of course you also pretty much have to buy their subscription service. That said, Maya is $3495… but you will probably also end up buying Mental Ray to do your rendering. I agree that Maxon priced C4D really high with its last release, and I personally think its a mistake. If I were shopping for a commercial app c4d wouldn’t even make the top 3, they are either crazy, or crazy like a fox. Which is good, because we need the competition in the market! Seriously, before this past C4D release, I was getting the feeling like in about 5 years the only non-AD animation tool out there would be Blender. They still have done nothing to fix the glaring Product management problems they have there, and still leave it up to the user community to document and explain things. Maybe they will end up buying Newtek’s animation division (wouldn’t that be ironic!) but for now, their animation is minimal.įor CA, there is also Messiah, but more and more the “Dare To Share” program is feeling like a “Going Out Of Business” sale. Modo doesn’t really do full-blown animation yet. I don’t know much about Houdini, but it has a small following. LW’s decision to ditch Core dealt them a blow – and their credibility is pretty shot these days anyway. They certainly are competing with it on price now! As for the rest of the competition… it gets smaller every day I think. They could very easily just become the MoGraph tool and continue to strengthen their toolset there.īut I think that they are also very much trying to compete with AD. Who knows what their motives are… I’m just happy to see it. I guess if it’s not autodesk your all around 3d package market only has c4d competing against lightwave, houdini and modo (and blender too of course None of those tools are renowned for good character animation tools blender faring very well there… maybe they’re trying to step up as THE all round DCC tool not owned by Autodesk? But it is encouraging to see them moving in the right direction. Do they still have a way to go? Absolutely.

That is a bold move in these timid times.

The main work was done in rendering, workflow, and CA tools (IMHO). Softimage’s last release was all about ICE. Even within AD’s product line you see this. What was LW 10’s biggest improvement? The renderer. I think packages are taking their cue from AD. Are you interested in movies? You want Maya… etc. Do you want to create for games? Max is for you. It does them no good to have Maya competing with Max and Max competing with Softimage. They have to segment their market, and find a niche for each package they own. Part of this, though, is the end result of AD’s taking over a large portion of the market. It is easier and safer to make incremental changes. After all they have to keep what they achieved, so marketing wise I can quite understand that. let’s take less risks and push just as much as needed. The truth to me seems to be something like these companies now have their own slice of the market.
